About Us
Montgomery County Progressive Asian American Network (MoCoPAAN) is a nonprofit membership organization based in Montgomery County, MD, working to cultivate a robust community of equity-minded Asian Americans.
Our History
Formed in 2022, our organization was born at a time of unprecedented visibility for Asian Americans.
From COVID-related hate crimes to debates around affirmative action, our community was thrust into the limelight of racial and political discourse.
Missing from these conversations on a local scale, however, was a progressive Asian American voice — one that could challenge the narrative of Asian Americans in Montgomery County as anti-equity, apolitical, or absent from conversations on race.
Identifying this critical lack, a small group of concerned community members came together to launch MoCoPAAN in its earliest form.
How We Work
Organizationally, our work lies at the crossroads of public policy advocacy, community education, and grassroots activism.
We’ve worked on issues of educational equity, data disaggregation, language accessibility and outreach, and immigrant rights.
By working across all levels of community engagement and local decisionmaking, our goal is to position Asian Americans as active, organized allies in the struggle for racial equity and social justice.
Who We Are
What started as a handful of advocates meeting over Zoom has since grown into a pan-Asian American network of nearly 100 members with a functioning six-member board, bound by a commitment to equity and justice.
