History Club's "The Murder of Vincent Chin" Discussion w/ Aryani Ong
Time & Location
About the Event
MoCoPAAN's, Founder Aryani Ong, will be joining Historian Jason Steinhaur in his weekly Clubhouse series, "History Club".
We'll discuss the 1982 murder of Vincent Chin - a case that shaped the Asian American civil rights movement and singularly impacted Aryani Ong's decision as a teenager and started her down the road towards civil rights law.
Jason Steinhaur is former director of the Lepage Center for History in the Public Interest; is a Senior Fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute; a contributor to TIME and CNN; an editorial board member of The Washington Post's "Made By History" section; and an adviser to the National WWII Museum.
The murder helped to galvanize Asians from diverse backgrounds into a common political category of “Asian American” that could jointly confront discrimination. We’ll discuss the circumstances surrounding Chin’s murder, its effects on Asian Americans, and how it resonates ominously with the attacks faced by Chinese Americans today.
